What is a Cocoon Swaddle Sack?
The Sleep Sack (previously known as the Jersey Sleep Sack) is an arms-out Sleep Sack for infants and toddlers. Its slim-fit shape and stretchy organic jersey cotton material are similar to the fit and feel of a swaddle to help ease the transition out of swaddling to arms-out sleeping. We recommend this product as a baby's first Sleep Sack, after the swaddling newborn phase is over.
Packaging may have either Jersey Sleeping Bag or Sleeping Bag in the product name.
Materials:
- 55% Organic Cotton / 40% Bamboo Viscose / 5% Elastane
- The Sleep Sack is made from Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton that is non-toxic and gentle on irritable skin. All ergoPouch fabrics are dyed with non-toxic water based dyes. The Sleep Sack is reviewed by the Eczema Association of Australasia (EEA) as a skin-friendly product.
Care:
- How to wash and dry your Sleep Sack
- Low tumble dry
- Moderately hot iron
- Dry cleanable
- Do not use bleach based stain removers
When cared for properly, this product will last several years and can be used for more than one baby. Our TOGs don't lose their warmth ratings over time, but a gentle fluff up in the dryer on a low setting helps maintain the fiber's loft, allowing air to circulate more effectively.
Size:
- May be worn with pyjamas underneath
- Garment is meant to be firm-fitting around the torso, and loose around the hips
Warnings:
- Ensure you buy the correct size for your baby's weight, to prevent the sack from riding up around your baby's face. See our Size Guide for more information.
- For sleep only. Do not allow a child to walk around when wearing the Sleep Sack. Not suitable for use in a 5 point harness.
Fire Hazard Label:
- As this product is made from organic cotton and bamboo and is not treated with chemical fire retardants the following white fire label applies.
- FIRE HAZARD LABEL according to AS/NZS 1249:2014: CAUTION Keep away from heat and flame.

How do I choose the right size sleep sack?
This decision comes down to your child's sleep style preference, and their weight and height. Our Sleep Sacks cover 3-12 months, 8-24 months and 2-4 years and 4-6 years old. Please see our Size Guide for dimensions.
A sleep sack should be fitted around the neck and the armholes to avoid your baby slipping through, or prevent them from pulling the material over their mouth and nose. The sleep sack should be bell shaped from the hips down, to help prevent displasia of the hip joint, and to allow for easy leg movement.
Our general recommendation for your child's progression through our sleep sack range is:
- 0-3M - Swaddled (arms in or out) with our Cocoon Swaddle Sack
- 3-12M - Transition to a Sleep Sack, which has a similar slim-fit design and fabrication to our Cocoons.
- 12-24M - For active toddlers who move a lot during sleep, a Sleep Suit Sack. The Sleep Suit Sack is also versatile for use in a 5-point harness.
- 2-3Y - Continue with your toddlers preferred pouch. Introduce a Toddler Pillow to help them learn to stay in one place during sleep.
- 3-4Y - Continue wearing a Sleep Suit Sack in 'legs' mode, or try a Sleep Onesie or 1.0 TOG / 2.0 TOG PJ's for warmth under a blanket, while you blanket train and transition to a big bed
- 4Y+ - Your big kid has graduated to sleeping with our TOG-rated Pajama's, congratulations!
Several of our Sleep Sack/Suits come in sleeveless and sleeved versions in sizes from 3m+. As a general rule, choose sleeves when wearing in room temperatures below 21°C/70°F.
Can I get a Sleep Sack with sleeves?
Yes, we have several sleep sack options with sleeves across our 1.0 TOG, 2.5 TOG and 3.5 TOG Sleep Sacks and 2.5 TOG and 3.5 TOG Sleep Suit Sacks and Sleep Onesies. We recommend using a sleep sack with sleeves for room temperatures below 68°F. All sleeves on our pouches are made in a 1.0 TOG fabric, to prevent overheating during sleep. You can also opt to add our Arm Warmers to any sleeveless sleep sack for extra warmth when needed, and layer underneath any pouch (ones with sleeves included) with Long Sleeve Rompers for extra warmth.
Does my child need sleeves on their sleep sack to be warm?
No. Only in cooler rooms would we recommend a sleeve on a sleep sack. In rooms 68°F and above, a warm layer underneath your child's sleeveless sleep sack will be enough to keep them warm during sleep. Remember, it is normal for your child's hands to feel cold during sleep. As long as the nape of their neck and chest is warm and dry to touch, they will be comfortable.
Do I use blankets on top of the Sleep Sacks?
Our Sleep Sacks are TOG rated meaning they have an insulation grade making them warm enough to use for sleep without loose bedding, and are designed to replace blankets. It is recommended by safe sleep guidelines to sleep your child with their face and head uncovered in their crib, free from loose bedding, pillows and toys. Please follow our included What to Wear Guide for simple-to-follow instructions on how to layer underneath the sleep sack, for warmth.
What should my child wear under a Sleep Sack?
This will vary from a diaper (or underwear for potty-trained toddlers), through to Bodywear and/or a Romper/Pajama's depending on the room temperature. Follow our Room Thermometer and What to Wear Guide (included in your packaging) to layer appropriately underneath, according to your room temperature and what TOG pouch you use. ergoPouch's under Rompers are also TOG rated to help make dressing for sleep easy.
How many Sleep Sacks do I need?
We recommend two lighter TOG sleep sacks, and two warmer TOG sleep sacks to see you through day and night sleeping, depending on your room temperature. Having two in each TOG provides one for wear if one is in the wash.
What is the difference between 0.2 TOG and 0.3 TOG? Which is better for hot weather sleeping?
For warm rooms above 72°F, we recommend either a 0.2 TOG Jersey Sleep Sack or 0.3 TOG Sleep Suit Sack. Note, there is no warmth difference between a 0.2 and 0.3 TOG bag; they simply have different TOG ratings due to their different fabrics.
When should I stop using Sleep Sacks?
This is a personal choice. You may find your toddler is ready to transition from a Sleep Sack to a Sleep Suit Sack or Sleep Onesie once they start walking and want more leg freedom in the crib. However, many children continue to wear a Sleep Sack or Sleep Suit Sack right up until they transition to a big bed with blankets (not before 2 years of age). Follow our Crib-to-Bed Transition Guide if you need help with this. Once your child is comfortable with blankets, they can stop using their pouch. Our customers tell us this usually happens anytime between 2.5–4 years of age, but a child can safely continue to wear a Sleep Sack or Sleep Suit for longer if they wish. Our size range currently caters up to 8 years in the Sleep Suit Sack, and 12 years in the Sleep Onesie.
