7 Ways To Get Your Baby To Sleep
You're most likely losing sleep and can barely function if you're reading this post. Does being a parent really have to be so hard? How does one get baby to sleep and make sure they stay asleep? While no two babies are exactly alike, there are some general tips that any newborn parents would find useful in setting up their baby for getting some good sleep. Read on for practical tips so you and your baby can finally catch some ZzzZzs!
1. Keep An Eye On your Baby's Sleepy Cues
Tune in with your baby's body language - they'll let you know when they’re tired. For example, if your little one is quiet, still and staring off into space, that means they’re getting drowsy and melatonin is starting to peak. That's the perfect timing to put the baby to sleep. If you miss that window, your baby will get overtired and cranky, and won't be able to fall sleep easily or stay asleep for long. It's all about reading body cues.
2. Help Your Newborn Set Their "internal clock"
Babies have different biological rhythms than us and tends to sleep around the clock, since they don't have a sense of day and night. While their circadian rhythm don't emerge until 5-6 months old, you can start helping them tell apart day and night to set a better sleeping routine. The best way to do it is to expose your baby to indirect sunlight in the day. Draw your curtains open and have natural sunlight coming into your home, and keep light and activity level low at night.
3. Swaddling helps!
A swaddle can go a long way! Besides using it as a light blanket, swaddling is also a great way to put your baby to sleep. Wrapping your baby snugly in a blanket makes them feel cozy in a womb-like environment, which soothes them and promotes better sleep. Make sure your baby sleeps on their back and gives two to three fingers space between the baby and the blanket.
4. Set Up A Better Sleep Environment With A White Noise Machine
Having white noise in the background can soothe your baby to sleep, but not all white noise machines are created equal. Make sure you get one that's low pitched but produce steady sounds, and make sure the noise level does not overshadow your baby's cries.
5. Establish A Bedtime Routine
Having a sleep ritual for your baby means keeping things calm, consistent and predictable. Experiment with what works in their usual sleeping spot in order to establish a routine and let them know it's bed time. Give your little one a bath, sing a nursery rhyme, read a storybook, set a timer with a nightlight are some of the things you can include in a good bedtime routine.
6. Don't Get Caught Up With The "Dos" and Don'ts" of Baby Sleep
Remember that you know your baby best! What might have worked for your friends' babies might not work on yours, and that's totally okay. There's also no right or wrong way of putting your baby to sleep. If your baby can only sleep with a specific pacifier or have music turned on in the background, so be it. There's no such things as negative sleep association.
